Summary
Coastal erosion threatens infrastructure, ecosystems, and livelihoods on every inhabited continent, yet globally consistent, high-cadence monitoring remains elusive. This study presents a multi-temporal shoreline change analysis spanning eight geomorphologically diverse sites distributed across five Köppen–Geiger climate zones, using Sentinel-2 Level-2A imagery acquired between 2017 and 2024. Shoreline positions were extracted by computing the Modified Normalised Difference Water Index (MNDWI) from green and short-wave infrared bands, applying Otsu’s adaptive threshold, and performing sub-pixel contour interpolation at the land–water boundary. Tidal corrections were applied using the FES2014 ocean tide model coupled with locally calibrated beach-slope proxies to reduce the horizontal positional uncertainty introduced by tidal stage variation.
