Summary

Coastal erosion threatens infrastructure, ecosystems, and livelihoods on every inhabited continent, yet globally consistent, high-cadence monitoring remains elusive. This study presents a multi-temporal shoreline change analysis spanning eight geomorphologically diverse sites distributed across five Koppen-Geiger climate zones, using Sentinel-2 Level-2A imagery acquired between 2017 and 2024. Shoreline positions were extracted by computing the Modified Normalised Difference Water Index (MNDWI) from green and short-wave infrared bands, applying Otsu's adaptive threshold, and performing sub-pixel contour interpolation at the land-water boundary. Tidal corrections were applied using the FES2014 ocean tide model coupled with locally calibrated beach-slope proxies to reduce the horizontal positional uncertainty introduced by tidal stage variation.

What the report covers

  • Tracks shoreline change across eight geomorphically different coastal sites between 2017 and 2024.
  • Uses Sentinel-2, MNDWI extraction, and tidal correction to build comparable shoreline time series.
  • Reports multiple change metrics instead of relying on a single erosion indicator.
  • Locates erosion hotspots and shows how retreat patterns cluster within each site.
  • Applies a five-level risk framework that connects change rates, uncertainty, and nearby asset exposure.

Why it matters

Shoreline change intelligence supports resilience planning, asset exposure assessment, and coastal risk prioritization.
