Summary

Urban tree canopy (UTC) provides critical ecosystem services—including stormwater interception, air-quality improvement, carbon sequestration, and surface-temperature regulation—yet spatially explicit, city-scale canopy maps remain scarce for many U.S. metropolitan areas. This study presents a scalable deep-learning framework for mapping UTC across five cities that span four Köppen– Geiger climate zones (Houston Cfa, San Francisco Csb, San Antonio Cfa, Detroit Dfa, and Sacramento Csa) using four-band (R, G, B, NIR) National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) orthoimagery at 0.6 m ground sample distance obtained from the Microsoft Planetary Computer.

This study presents a scalable deep-learning framework for mapping UTC across five cities that span four Köppen– Geiger climate zones (Houston Cfa, San Francisco Csb, San Antonio Cfa, Detroit Dfa, and Sacramento Csa) using four-band (R, G, B, NIR) National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) orthoimagery at 0.6 m ground sample distance obtained from the Microsoft Planetary Computer.
Pseudo-labels were generated through an automated pipeline combining normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) thresholding, grey-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) texture features, and morphological filtering, then used to train a U-Net architecture with a ResNet-18 encoder.

Why it matters

Urban canopy analysis supports climate adaptation, greening programs, and evidence-based public realm planning.
