Summary
The United States National Bridge Inventory (NBI) catalogues over 617,000 bridges inspected on a 24-month visual cycle. Between inspections, structural condition remains largely unmonitored. This study investigates whether freely available multi-sensor satellite imagery— NAIP (0.6 m optical), Sentinel-2 (10 m multitemporal), and Sentinel-1 GRD (10 m SAR amplitude)— can provide surface condition proxies that correlate with NBI deck, superstructure, and substructure ratings. We analyze 640 bridges across eight U.S. cities spanning six Köppen climate zones, extracting 27 satellite-derived features per bridge. Spearman rank correlations with Benjamini–Hochberg false-discovery-rate correction identify 23 significant feature–rating pairs out of 81 tested.
