Summary

Monitoring road network expansion in rapidly urbanizing cities of the developing world is essential for sustainable urban planning, infrastructure investment, and environmental impact assessment. However, systematic, large-scale observation of new road construction remains challenging due to the cost and infrequency of ground-based surveys. This study presents a satellite-based framework for detecting road network expansion using multi-temporal Sentinel-2 Level-2A imagery at 10 spatial resolution. We analyze ten cities distributed across six Koppen climate zones-Lagos, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Cairo, Riyadh, Hyderabad, Dhaka, Ho Chi Minh City, Lima, and Bogota-spanning the period 2018-2024.

What the report covers

  • Detects new road construction from multi-temporal Sentinel-2 imagery between 2018 and 2024.
  • Compares ten fast-growing cities across six climate settings.
  • Combines spectral change analysis with directional morphological filtering to isolate linear road features.
  • Measures new-road length and expansion density for each city.
  • Checks results against OpenStreetMap road networks using buffer-based accuracy metrics.

Why it matters

Road expansion analysis supports infrastructure planning, development monitoring, and regional growth assessment.
