Summary
Monitoring road network expansion in rapidly urbanizing cities of the developing world is essential for sustainable urban planning, infrastructure investment, and environmental impact assessment. However, systematic, large-scale observation of new road construction remains challenging due to the cost and infrequency of ground-based surveys. This study presents a satellite-based framework for detecting road network expansion using multi-temporal Sentinel-2 Level-2A imagery at 10 m spatial resolution. We analyze ten cities distributed across six Köppen climate zones—Lagos, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Cairo, Riyadh, Hyderabad, Dhaka, Ho Chi Minh City, Lima, and Bogotá—spanning the period 2018–2024.
