Summary
Monitoring the fill levels of large-scale oil storage tanks provides critical intelligence for energy market analysis, supply-chain transparency, and environmental safety oversight. Conventional approaches rely on proprietary commercial satellite constellations and manual interpretation, limiting accessibility and reproducibility. This study presents an end-to-end, open-source pipeline for detecting external floating-roof tanks (EFRTs) and estimating a filllevel proxy (FLP) from freely available Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery. We systematically analyse twelve petroleum storage sites spanning six continents and five Köppen climate zones, representing diverse atmospheric, geographic, and industrial conditions.
