Summary

Urban air pollution remains a leading environmental health risk, yet spatially resolved monitoring is constrained by the sparsity and uneven distribution of ground-based sensor networks, particularly in lowand middle-income cities. This study presents a multi-sensor satellite fusion framework for detecting and mapping urban pollution hotspots across 10 cities spanning seven Köppen–Geiger climate zones: Beijing, Delhi, Los Angeles, São Paulo, Cairo, London, Lagos, Seoul, Mexico City, and Jakarta.

What the report covers

  • Maps relative urban pollution hotspots across ten cities spanning seven climate settings.
  • Fuses TROPOMI, MODIS MAIAC, Sentinel-2, and ERA5 data into a shared gridded feature stack.
  • Builds a composite pollution proxy rather than claiming calibrated concentration estimates.
  • Uses a multilayer perceptron and leave-one-city-out testing to assess cross-city transferability.
  • Compares hotspot patterns with ground observations to show where proxy screening is dependable.

Why it matters

Urban pollution screening can support environmental reporting, hotspot prioritization, and broader public-health intelligence workflows.
