Summary
Monitoring airport activity is essential for aviation planning, infrastructure assessment, and economic analysis, yet conventional methods relying on flight tracking data and ground surveys provide incomplete spatial coverage and limited physical characterization of parked aircraft fleets. This study presents a satellite-based framework for detecting and characterizing aircraft at 15 major U.S. airports across eight Köppen–Geiger climate zones using sub-meter National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) orthoimagery obtained via the Microsoft Planetary Computer. The detection pipeline integrates adaptive local contrast thresholding, morphological shape filtering, and a pretrained ResNet-18 feature extractor with heuristic confidence scoring to identify individual aircraft on aprons, taxiways, and runways.
