Parking lot occupancy is a valuable proxy for retail activity and consumer demand, widely used in financial analytics and commercial real estate. Most satellitebased approaches rely on proprietary very-high-resolution imagery (≤0.3 m), limiting scalability and reproducibility. We present a fully open-data framework for estimating retail parking lot occupancy using freely available NAIP aerial imagery (0.3 m resolution) and a YOLOv8 object detection model pre-trained on the COCO dataset. We analyzed 300 large retail parking lots (≥5000 m2) across 12 U.S. cities spanning seven Köppen climate zones.
