Summary

Maritime ports handle approximately 80% of global trade by volume, yet near-real-time monitoring of port activity remains a significant challenge for supply chain management, economic intelligence, and policy formulation. Traditional data sources—including the Automatic Identification System (AIS) and periodic port authority statistics—suffer from reporting delays, coverage gaps, and potential manipulation. Satellite remote sensing offers a complementary and independent means of observing port operations at global scale. In this study, we present a multi-sensor satellite remote sensing framework for monitoring port activity across 12 globally distributed ports spanning diverse geographic, climatic, and economic contexts.
